Me TL;DR

I've been a Civil Engineer, It Consultant, Web Developer, Stay at home Dad, Trailing Husband and Volunteer

I'm a cook, photographer, writer and technophile. At the age of 53 I discovered I am ADHD positive.

An unconventional Brit, now living in New York.

For the long version - see myabout page.

What am I doing now?

See my now page.

Hunta Dad?

Long before my diagnosis, I was Kitmonster. This was my identity and hiding in plain sight, the well documented ADHD phenomena SOS - Shiny Object Syndrome. After diagnosis, my most valuable discovery was that I'm a hunter not a farmer. But I'm not a hunter, in the modern meaning of the word. Hunta is the Old English word for hunter. This I can relate to. I'm also a father and my children grew up with a stay at home dad. So Hunta Dad is my new identity.

If you'd like to know more about why "I'm a hunter not a farmer" resonated so strongly then here's how I made this discovery.

I listened to Peter Shankman interviewing Seth Godin on his Faster Than Normal Podcaste

Seth wrote a blog post back in 2010 about markers confusing Hunters and Farmers

Seth links to Thom Hartmann's Hunter and Farmer Approach to ADD/ADHD There's an excellent table and I can relate to every "Disorder". For example:

Trait as it appears in the "Disorder" view: How it appears in the "Hunter" view: Opposite "Farmer" traits:
Daydreamer Bored by mundane tasks; enjoy new ideas, excitement, "the hunt" being hot on the trial. Focused. Good at follow-through, tending to details, "taking care of business."

How I built this site

Derek Sivers has an admirable goal Tech Independence not depending on any particular company or software. As I learn about Ethical Hacking, I'm discovering the importance of Open Source software. I followed Derek's excellent guide Tech Independence and this website is running on the openBSD server I built following his instructions. I also took his lead and example, with this page layout and now page.

Obsidianis my writing tool of choice. Alas, it's not open source. They do respect user data though.

Apps come and go, but your data should last. Obsidian uses non-proprietary plain text Markdown files stored locally on your device. You have total control over your data, which means you can use Obsidian offline and switch to another app easily if you ever need to.

I spent a stupid amount of time looking for an open source note taking app before being saved by Sam Matla and his excellent video Stop Procrastinating With Note-Taking Apps Like Obsidian, Roam, Logseq

The HTML is generated using https://docs.obsidianweb.net - an Obsidian Plugin. What does that mean? My entire "vault" of text files can exported in one go and uploaded to my site. No coding required. I can focus on writing.
